Coral

Coral was born in 1988 and I was very fortunate to actually see Coral many times as a calf with his mother, Silver.  Coral was named for the marks on his fluke that look somewhat like coral heads.  Below is Coral (as a young calf) flippering with Silver.  Coral has the short flippers.

Coral's tail pattern is a beautiful white with thick, black marks.  Look closely and you can see several places where killer whales grabbed him by the tail.

Coral is very dramatic while feeding and sometimes seems to use the boat's sides to trap fish.  Coral has many white scars near his blowholes that help you identify him.

How can I see more of Coral?

Coral on DVD ($18.99)

Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names

The story of Coral is four minutes in length.  It shows Coral as a young calf breaching, lobtailing and even playing in seaweed!  He is seen close to the boat and feeding on small schooling fish.  Coral has adopted a unique feeding style seen only in the Gulf of Maine.  It is called kick-feeding.  Coral swims to a school of fish and slams his tail on top of them.  This seems to stun the fish.  Coral swims under the school, blows a few bubbles and comes up through the school with his mouth wide open.

Coral is also on several of our tapes in the eleven volume series "Wonderful Whales"

Volume 8 (Coral completes a huge open mouth lunge which fills the screen.  You can see the marks on his head as he swims by and dives into the sunset)

Volume 9 (Coral opens his mouth more than 90 degrees while feeding and dives with his tail filling the screen.  Coral is also seen feeding with Nimbus)

Volume 11 (Coral is seen swimming close to shore when he kicks the water with his tail and comes up with an open mouth lunge)

A Real Whale Watch Trip - July 20, 2001 ($12.95)

At 5 PM we left the pier for a fabulous sunset whale watch.  We were delighted when we spied feeding humpback whales and slowly approached.  Coral was the main attraction as he kept feeding with his mouth open very near to us, over and over again.
