Fracture

Fracture is a popular whale born in 1990 to Cats Paw.  He has been seen every year since being identified as a calf.  In 1995, Fracture and a female named Zeppelin were seen more than any other humpback whales.  He was named for a thin line on the right fluke that looks like the tail has a "fracture".  While this is difficult to identify, the small white dot at the top center is easily seen.

Fracture is also a social whale and likes to approach boats.  However, the most exciting meeting of Fracture and another species was observed on August 9, 2003.  Fracture was observed swimming near a pod of pilot whales and decided to join them.  It appeared to be a nuisance to the pilot whales and they continued to move away from Fracture.  During this encounter, Fracture was blowing loudly and at times was observed flippering.

A Real Whale Watch Trip - August 9, 2003

We left the pier at 9:00 AM and about an hour later found several humpback whales.  One was Fracture who came over near the boat.  We were also seeing a pod of pilot whales nearby.   Fracture decided to join them.  It appeared to be a nuisance to the pilot whales and they continued to move away from Fracture.  This didn't bother Fracture, he just kept joining the group!  During this encounter, Fracture was blowing loudly and at times was observed flippering.
