What is the most important fact about a whale?

It must be that each whale is an individual with a unique personality.  Remember them as having families and giving each new calf a great deal of care over nearly a year.  If we think of them as individuals, then we will do things to keep each one safe.

Do you live in Woods Hole or Falmouth MA?

I live in Pennsylvania just like you.  You can do anything you want to do in life if you try hard enough.  I worked in a bank, but wanted to work with whales instead.  I found a way to do it by starting a company that produces DVD's for kids to see and learn about whales.

Are you a professional whale watcher?

I guess I am a professional whale watcher.  My company has provided jobs for people to go out and see whales and record everything they do with video cameras.  Since 1988 we have spent 68,000 hours recording all the marine life in the Gulf of Maine.

How did you become interested in whales?

I went out whale watching a few times and the whales did so many interesting things, I just knew that I wanted to help other people see them too.  When I learned that marine biologists could identify individual whales and named them and that they had unique personalities, I wanted to spend every day with them, learning more and more.  If you want to work with whales, you'll have to study science and math.

Did you see whales as a little kid?

No, I first saw a pod of whales as a sailor in the US Navy.  I was 18 years old.

Where will you see whales next and will they be the same ones you introduced to us at Gladwyne?

I will see the same whales.  I'll go to Massachusetts and hope to see Salt, Colt, Cats Paw and many others that you saw at my lecture and on Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names.  If you go to Plymouth, MA and board the Captain John boats, within 35-50 minutes you'll be in the area where whales are seen almost every day.  The scientists on the boats will tell you what species you are looking at and even the name of the whale.

Can I see more video clips of whales?

Yes.  This website has several clips of whales.  Click on Salt & Friends above on the left side and it will take you to a page of videos. I have also posted many free clips about whales on WWW.YOUTUBE.COM.   You should get your parents to help you when you go to youtube.  Search on "whales with names".  You will see more than 20 clips.  My favorites are Salt & Friends DVD and Song, Salt and calf, Thorn, Colt, Ember, Sockeye, Mars and Fringe.
