Whale Naming Rules

There are just a few rules in giving new whales names.

1. It should be named for a distinct mark on the underside of its tail or other part of its body.

2. The name should not reflect a gender, meaning a male or female (girl or boys) name.

3. The name cannot be a human name. (Although a few whales were named to honor people or conservationists many years ago.  The humpback whales Agassiz, Clapton and Churchill are examples).

Hint: This large male is known for his spectacular visits with whale watching boats..

Hint: His mother is named Cardhu.

Hint: He was born in 1982.

Hint: Her calves Tassel, Thread and Fiber give hints to her name.

Hint: She is a grandmother..

Hint: First seen in 1979.
