Sockeye

Video clip of Sockeye on You Tube (You will leave our web)

Sockeye is an extraordinary whale.  He is very likely to come near your boat and may show you many common whale behaviors.  It is fairly easy to identify Sockeye at the ocean's surface.

Sockeye was named after the sockeye salmon whose jaw appears similar to Sockeye's jaw.  His upper jaw is deformed and doesn't quite fit properly with his lower jaw.  It looks a little like he is pouting.  There is also a large white scar under his blowholes.

All the other humpbacks have baleen growing straight down from their upper jaws.  Not Sockeye.  His baleen is deformed and it grows out towards the sides of his jaw.

Sockeye also has many scars and even teeth marks caused by killer whale attacks!  His life has not been an easy one.

The picture above clearly shows the tooth marks on Sockeye's tail.

Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names

The story of Sockeye is three minutes in length.  You will see close-ups of his jaw, baleen, tail pattern and all the scars and marks that make him unique.  Sockeye is close to the boat and lifts his flipper up over the heads of several whale watchers.  This gives you a good look at the size of his flipper, estimated at 15 feet in length.

(Same program as on the DVD above)

Sockeye is also on several of our tapes in the eleven volume series "Wonderful Whales"

Wonderful Whales Volume 8, 9 and 11.

(All Volumes $12.95 each, Volume 1 Special $10.00)

Volume 8 (Sockeye dives under the boat, comes up on the other side and dives under again.  He is also with another whale, spyhops and then slashes his tail through the water)

Volume 9 (Sockeye is seen in a display of feeding on small fish)

Volume 11 (Sockeye is seen feeding with his mouth open and while he is straining out the water, birds hitch a ride on his head.  Sockeye is the only whale that seems to create a waterfall effect while straining out the seawater.  This is due to his baleen sticking out the sides.  It is very interesting to see.  He is also on his back lobtailing right beside the boat)

A Real Whale Watch Trip - August 5, 1996 ($12.95)

At 1:30 PM we left the pier for a fabulous whale watch and 40 minutes later sailed into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.  We were delighted when we spied feeding humpback whales and slowly approached.  Sockeye was the main attraction as he kept feeding with his mouth open very near to us, over and over again.
