Sod

(WDCS UK Adopt A Whale)

(watch a video clip below of Sod)

Sod is another whale named for scratches or scars on her dorsal fin.  She takes her name as an acronym "Scratches On Dorsal".  Over the years since she was first seen in 1979, the scratches have mostly healed and are not easily seen.  But her tail pattern is very easily identified.

Sod is an active feeding whale and can be seen in dramatic open mouth lunges.  You can easily see the baleen growing from her upper jaw.  The birds are there to steal a fish or two from Sod.

Your Adopted Whale: Sod

We selected the very best clips of Sod from 17,096 trips to the feeding grounds where this whale can be sighted from April thru October.

You will be delighted to spend 18 minutes watching Sod and her calf Tread.  Sod lunges through schools of fish with an open mouth while Tread who is not eating fish yet and is still nursing, just stays close to his mother.  Then Sod joins another adult humpback whale named Trunk and they become interested in the boat.
