Spoon
(Ocean Alliance Adopt A Whale)
(watch a video clip below of Spoon)
Unlike many other whales, Spoon was not named for a pattern on her tail but for her "spoon-shaped" dorsal fin. Her tail is fairly unique however as both tips have white patches and a large white scar is near the center of her fluke.
Spoon appears to be one of the largest whales in the population, well over 50 feet in length. She also appears to be very wide. Spoon is known for tremendous feeding displays where she comes up out of the water, almost high enough to see her belly button. Her belly is completely distended, holding 1000's of gallons of water and fish.
Photos at the bottom of this page show you Spoon's feeding behavior.

How can I see more of Spoon?
Spoon can be seen on two DVD's produced by The Whale Video Company ($18.99 each)
Salt & Friends: Humpback Whales With Names
Spoon is introduced as the mother of Regulus. You see a huge humpback tail that belongs to Spoon. Highlights of this segment include Regulus in a behavior that is as much fun as it is strange. He hits himself with his flipper and this behavior is unique to Regulus.
Your Adopted Whale: Spoon
We selected the very best clips of Spoon from 17,096 trips to the feeding grounds where this whale can be sighted from April thru October.
You will be delighted to spend 21 minutes watching excellent footage of Spoon. You see her traveling with another humpback named Conduit. Spoon is also seen with a calf which at one point it is believed that nursing just below the surface was witnessed. Spoon and her calf are active by flippering and tail breaching.
Note: VHS Videotapes are available for both programs too (Each title just $12.95)
