Tornado

Tornado was born in 1988 to a whale named Fringe.  She was named for the white oval on the right half of her fluke.  The picture (left) below shows Fringe on the left and Tornado beside her as a calf in 1988.

Tornado is famous for coming up to the boats.  It isn't often that a whale looks up at people with its eye wide open, but Tornado did.  You can see this on the whale watch trip described at the bottom of this page.

A Real Whale Watch Trip - October 28, 1989 ($12.95)

We left the pier and 40 minutes later sailed into the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.  We saw a humpback in the distance and approached slowly to find Tornado.  We were rewarded with an incredible close approach.  Tornado showed great interest in the boat by twisting and turning in every way to get a good look at us.  You will see her eye, watch her stand on her head, thrill to a great spyhop and look her right in the face.
